MoCo Mitzvah Moms has a dual mission:
to support local families with children experiencing prolonged medical care needs
while creating a network of moms with young children to strengthen our own community.
Throughout the two isolating years of the pandemic, many of us connected through local parenting Facebook groups but mostly only saw in-person a few close friends or other moms whose children were our childrens' classmates? As the world began to slowly reopen, a handful of talented, passionate, and compassionate friends from various synagogues, neighborhoods, and schools gathered, in hopes that we could bridge our smaller mom communities together and work towards this important cause. Word spread about our mission, and it became eye opening to see how many other families had spent time with a their own child in either the NICU, surgery room, or other hospital stays and they wanted join our group.
In our first year and a half, we held a variety successful events. We packed over 500 parent care packages filled to the brim with toiletries, snacks, and other hospital stay essentials, collected and donated new clothing and games for children, and raised money to fund future parent care packages. We have had successful fundraising social events, where moms and their families have enjoyed time together and networked, all while supporting our important cause.
A sunflower is always present at our events and in our materials. It is one of the most resilient flowers that can withstand all types of weather. The sunflower always finds the light and grows towards the sun. Though it appears to be one flower, it's actually a family of flowers growing in a cluster, supporting each other. Our hope is for our community to come together and support each other during times when we each may need help finding the light.
We have a MoCo Mitzvah Mom Facebook group and welcome all that identify as moms in Montgomery County, Maryland, with young children to become members and read about our important work. We appreciate donations of any amount through Venmo at @mocomitzvahmoms that will go directly to funding the parent care packages.
